VPN Adoption in Europe
VPN subscription adoption varies significantly across Europe: Netherlands (28%), UK (25%), Germany (21%), France (19%), Switzerland (17%), Italy (14%), Spain (12%). Higher adoption correlates with higher digital literacy, not necessarily higher privacy concern.
The Privacy Perception Gap
Our survey found that only 34% of VPN subscribers could accurately describe what a VPN protects against (traffic encryption and IP masking). 41% believed a VPN protects against malware. 28% believed a VPN makes them anonymous online. Neither belief is accurate. This perception gap is partly driven by VPN marketing that overstates protection.
Price Dynamics
The VPN market is uniquely competitive — largely because switching costs are minimal. NordVPN, Surfshark and other providers regularly adjust promotional pricing. This competitive pressure has actually kept VPN prices below general inflation: the average paid VPN costs €4.20/month in 2026 vs €4.80 in 2020. Effective price competition is rare in the subscription economy.
